Texture classification using a polymer-based MEMS tactile sensor

چکیده
We classify surface textures using a polymer-based microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) tactile sensor array and a robust statistical approach. We demonstrate that a MEMS tactile sensor resembling a flexible sensor ‘skin’ built using a polyimide substrate can successfully classify textures. Texture classification is achieved by using a maximum likelihood decision rule that optimally classifies patterns in the presence of noisy signal to cope with texture variation and random noise. Using a 4 × 4 sensor array, a variety of simple textures are distinguished despite low sensitivity mechanical strain gauges serving as a transduction element. The final result analyzed using leave-one-out cross validation yields acceptable overall performance of 68% correct classification. Directions for future work to improve identification performance of the system are also presented. (Some figures in this article are in colour only in the electronic version)

متن کاملTactile texture recognition with a 3-axial force MEMS integrated artificial finger
Recently, several three-axial MEMS-based force sensors have been developed. This kind of force micro sensor is also called tactile sensor in literature for its similarities in size and sensitivity with human mechanoreceptors. Therefore, we believe these three-axial force sensors being able to analyse textures properties while sliding on a surface, as would do a person with his finger. In this p...

متن کاملA Flexible Capacitive Sensor with Encapsulated Liquids as Dielectrics
Flexible and high-sensitive capacitive sensors are demanded to detect pressure distribution and/or tactile information on a curved surface, hence, wide varieties of polymer-based flexible MEMS sensors have been developed. High-sensitivity may be achieved by increasing the capacitance of the sensor using solid dielectric material while it deteriorates the flexibility. Using air as the dielectric...
